Student Intervention meetings
Something that our team does throughout the year is conduct student meetings. After the end of the first quarter, we each look through our homeroom kids and determine students that are not performing up to their abilities. We bring them in, show them their report cards, and talk to them about stepping it up, working hard and showing strong character. It works for some and not for others but it shows we are reaching out to them and trying to make a difference. It lets the kids know we aren't giving up on them and they still have a chance.

What does that word mean?
Every month, we have a new character word at our school. The word for October is courage. As a Friday bell ringer, I wrote on the board, "Write 1/2 page about what courage means to you." This activity went just fine in my first two classes. We talked about their meanings and then I read the dictionary definition to them. After lunch, my sixth period class came in and several kids whined that they didn't know what the word meant. I told them that I wasn't going to explain it to them because I wanted them to think about and figure it out for themselves. After a few minutes, I heard a student try to pronounce the word. He said "mu, mu.... I'm thinking to myself, "the word courage does not start with an m!" I look up on the board and see that someone has replaced the word courage with the word mutiny! No wonder they didn't know what I was talking about. I went to the board and changed it and told them they needed to write about courage not mutiny. A few minutes later, one of our coaches came in and asked "have any good definitions for the word mutiny?' HAHA! I told him "nope," they didn't have a clue :-)

What a scare!
Last Thursday, one of my students from last year was hit by a car! She was going to McDonald's before the football game with a group of students and they tried to cross three lanes of traffic. One car stopped and motioned the group to cross but the other lanes of traffic didn't stop and she kind of glanced off the car door. One of the other teachers at our school witnessed the accident and was the first to respond. Luckily she is ok and had only a minor foot injury. It really scared me as a teacher hearing a story about one of my students.

Making a Difference
Once upon a time there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach,he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day.So he began to walk faster to catch up.As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn't dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer he called out,"Good morning! What are you doing?"The young man paused, looked up and replied,"Throwing starfish in the ocean.""I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?""The sun is up and the tide is going out.And if I don't throw them in they'll die.""But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it.You can't possibly make a difference!"The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the waves and said-"It made a difference to that one."
